En nuestro país existe una tradición de brigadas y unidades muralistas que se remonta a los años 60’ y 70’, con grupos como la Brigada Ramona Parra, cuyos murales son parte de la identidad de aquel proyecto político que se plasmó en la Unidad Popular. Si bien en estos tiempos no tienen, quizás, la relevancia que tuvieron en esos momentos en lo que se refiere al imaginario de la izquierda y a su protagonismo en los procesos sociales, existen muchos ejemplos de unidades y grupos muralistas que mantienen dicha tradición viva, participando activamente en luchas cotidianas en poblaciones y sindicatos de diferentes partes del país. J’ai une vague intuition que les Haïtiens en général (toutes classes sociales confondues) se fichent de la question des langues et particulièrement de la question de la langue créole en Haïti. Les débats incessants et chargés d’émotion qui surgissent régulièrement à propos de l’opposition traditionnelle français vs créole peuvent faire illusion mais je les considère comme l’arbre qui cache la forêt. Pour les locuteurs haïtiens en général, la langue créole demeure le cadet de leurs soucis. Ils se contentent de s’en servir pour régler leurs innombrables taches quotidiennes mais ne se privent pas de la vilipender quand l’occasion se présente. Certaines personnes pourraient me rétorquer qu’il en est ainsi chez la majorité des locuteurs du monde, qui prennent leur langue maternelle pour un fait acquis et parlent comme ils marchent ou comme ils respirent, par exemple. C’est vrai, sauf que la majorité des locuteurs du monde ne vilipendent pas à tout bout de champ la langue qu’ils utilisent quotidiennement. Pour d’autres locuteurs, vaguement conscients de l’importance de leur langue native, on entend parfois des réflexions du genre « Ala yon bèl lang se kreyòl ! Mwen fè sa m vle ak li » (Quelle belle langue, le créole ! J’en fais ce que je veux) sans se rendre compte qu’une telle position est loin d’être absolue, que tout le monde peut dire autant de sa langue maternelle.

Black Cat Publishers has just finished publishing a book I wrote called "Yardbird Blues; 25 Years of a Wobbly in the Maritime Industry". The term "Yardbird" is an old term that longshore workers and ship's crews used for those that came on to the ships to repair them.

On the 13th of June 2010, the Poor People’s World Cup successfully kicked-off their first day of matches at the Avendale soccer fields, next to Athlone stadium in Cape Town. Early in the morning, the first minibuses with soccer teams arrived from all over Cape Town to play their first games in this Poor People’s tournament.
