In repudiation of the cowardly murders of the Organisers of the 6th March demonstration for justice and peace in Colombia

1. At this present time, we would like to express our repudiation and our most forceful protest toward the cowardly and vile assassinations of four of the trade unionists who participated in the organisation of the huge manifestation on the 6th March of tribute to the victims of the Colombian armed social conflict and the denunciation of the terrorism of the state and that of the paramilitaries. At the same time we send our most sincere condolences to the families of those assassinated in these difficult times. We share in your pain.

2. The latest victims of the paramilitary violence are Leonidas Gómez, from a bank employee's trade union; Carmen Cecilla Carvajal, affiliated member of ASINORT trade union; Gildardo Antonio Gómez, affiliated member of ADIDA; Carlos Burbano, affiliated member of the trade union of hospital workers. Our duty is to forever remember the names of those who with their lives have given us a lesson in courage and commitment to human rights.

3. We equally denounce the atmosphere of threats and intimidation that have surrounded the aforementioned march. They have not only been individual threats either, that translated themselves into criminal acts like the fire-arms attack on the organiser of the march in Pereira on the 29th February, Luz Adriana González, who miraculously escaped unhurt or like the attempted assault on Rafael Boada, of a bank employee's trade union, who escaped unhurt as well in a fire-arms attack undertaken by individuals on a motorcycle. We know also of collective threats, like those inflicted upon the indigenous village of the Awás of Narino or the residents of barrio 8th of March in Medellin who were pursued relentlessly by paramilitaries to dissuade them from participating in the manifestation. These are only some examples of the terror that goes in while living in Colombia by the paramilitary groups who frequently act with the full complicity of the authorities.

4. These crimes and threats don't constitute isolated incidents. They very much follow the established practice of terrorism coming from the sectors who wield the economic and political power in Colombia who have come to hold systematic sway over the country for over five decades. These practices seek to paralyse those involved in the fight for social justice and physically eliminate any form of opposition.

5. We would like to make it clear that the ultimate responsibility for these deaths and threats lies with the government of Alvaro Uribe Vélez who has been-to say the least- very much tolerant of paramilitarism, and also his presidential advisor, José Obdulio Gaviria, who deliberately affirmed that the march was organised by a group of insurgents, giving in effect, carte blanche to paramilitaries to act against the march organisers.

6. This fact demonstrates that paramilitarism has not been demobilised and continues to represent a threat to the physical integrity of the popular sectors of Colombian society. Indeed, it represents today a even greater threat, though rarely recognised-these deaths point to the wholesale failure of the so-called "Law of Justice and Peace".

7. This fact also demonstrates the limits of Colombian democracy and the grave risks that govern the lives of those who, with much courage, exercise their right to freedom of expression and dare to question the politics of the government. These deaths represent a decisive blow to the supposed virtues of "Democratic Security". Security! For who? For the thousands of people assassinated, disappeared and displaced by the paramilitaries? For the trade unionists and the peasant farmers? For those called 'False Positives'? Democracy? For who? For the opposition? For the victims of State crimes and paramilitarism?

8. If the Uribe government has had such success in the fight against terrorism, how does he want to make the world believe it? Why have the massacres not stopped against the trade unionists, the human rights defenders, the peasant farmers and the social leaders? If, as they say, they have been able to contain the insurgent groups, then why do they show themselves impotent to stop the crimes of the paramilitaries? Would we be right in supposing tolerance or connivance with them?

9. Lastly, we want to mention that we will stay ready and alert to mobilise our solidarity with those who have been victims of threats that have yet to materialise. At the same time we summon the Colombian authorities to carry out their commitment to protect all citizens, not just those who converge with their ideas.

NEVER AGAIN SILENCE IN THE FACE OF MURDER!

NO MORE LIES- DISMANTLE PARAMILITARISM NOW!

THAT WE CAN EXPRESS OURSELVES WITHOUT IT COSTING OUR LIVES!

esmad_1.jpg imageInternational Statement Against Police Brutality and the Repression of the Youth in Colombia 01:57 Fri 13 Aug by Red Libertaria Popular Mateo Kramer 0 comments

As repression assumes fearful proportions in Colombia, sheer violence is the mechanism to impose a terrorist mafia regime, an enclave subservient to US imperialist interests in the region. The current regime represents the political expression of the harshest class violence against workers in the region. This is not shameful for the Colombian people but it represents a menace to all of the Latin American people. Those libertarian organisations who have signed this statement do so in order to show solidarity with the libertarian movement in Colombia which, along with the rest of the people’s movement, knows no quarter in its struggle against State Terrorism and Imperialism.

imageThe murder of a peasant leader who had opposed the mining project of La Colosa (Cajamarca, Tolima) Nov 07 by José Antonio Gutiérrez D. 0 comments

In the afternoon of the 2 November, the peasant leader César García, president of the community association (Junta de Acción Comunal) of Cajon La Leona, was killed in cold blood by a shot to the head as he returned to his homestead with his wife and son. García had become visible through his participation in the Environmental and Rural Committee of Cajamarca for the defence of life, water and food (Comité Ambiental y Campesino de Cajamarca por la Defensa de la Vida, el Agua y el Alimento), an organisation which has been leading the community´s struggle against the large-scale extractive project La Colosa. It is key to ask ourselves, who benefits from this crime? Unfortunately we are all too familiar with this situation, where the interests of powerful people are threatened, then “dark forces” arise which plant the seeds of destabilisation, terror, death…after which, in the midst of the onslaught of repression to guarantee “investor security”, the “peacemakers” make their triumphant entry with portfolios brimming with business contracts.

imageThe Colombian Government sows terror: the cases of Cajamarca and Castilla (Tolima) Sep 06 by José Antonio Gutiérrez D. 0 comments

As examples of the unprecedented criminal violence with which the social protest has been repressed here are the cases of two localities in the department of Tolima: the municipality of Cajamarca and the community of Castilla in the municipality of Coyaima. It must be stressed that these are not exceptional cases, rather two more cases of the officially-endorsed violence against the people that has assailed the whole country.

In Colombia, when investment arrives, repression arrives also. Tolima, in the centre of the country, with innumerable mineral and hydro resources, is becoming an important attraction for both national and transnational capital. The problem is that in the same region there are also peasants who, generation after generation have put down their roots, and who do not want to be forced from their land to facilitate a quarry on the mountains.

imageUribe's other war: students and public universities under siege in the Colombian conflict Oct 08 by CILEP & José Antonio Gutiérrez D, 0 comments

For years, the dirty war raging in Colombia has been moving onto the university campuses; students, workers and professors have suffered threats, persecution and murder. Persecution from state agencies has been combined with an orchestrated media campaign to create an atmosphere of hysteria, which reached its climax in the famous videos shown by Gina Parody, an Uribe supporter and senator, and accusations from the director of the Department of Administrative Security (DAS), that accused the organised student movement of being a mere façade of the insurgency. It is not necessary to insist that this atmosphere of collective hysteria is what the state was looking for in order to justify the use of brutal force, that under president Uribe Vélez’s so-called policy of Democratic Security means nothing but the militarisation of all spheres of social life. This is a multifaceted strategy - and has been the typical response of the dominant classes to social protest - in which the repressive actions by both the official institutions and unofficial institutions (ie. Paramilitary gangs) have combined. The collective nature of this document is both a denunciation and a reflection that aims at strengthening the resistance they are trying to suppress, by revealing the mechanisms which are used to advance the institutional and paramilitary intervention in the public universities, and thus to help to advance towards the defeat of this authoritarian project being imposed in Colombia.
