The Iraq war is a tragedy that is increasingly vivid to everyone. The wasted human life and massive scale of destruction being waged by the US government and allied forces is horrifying. This war is being perpetuated by the interests of the State and business, which benefit directly from war. Iraq is important to them for a number of reasons. It is located strategically in a geographical and military center of power in the middle east. The natural resources of Iraq compound this importance, despite whatever short term costs a war might have on oil production. The costs of the war to the State are great, both in terms of the economic costs and the loss of support within and around the world. Still the conquest of power and wealth fuel their lust.

This war is senseless and unjust, but it is unfortunately neither unique nor an isolated incident. The rise of democratic governments has not halted the march of war. Wars have increased in frequency, deaths, and atrocities since the twin-birth of capitalism and powerful centralized governments. It does not matter where you fall on the political spectrum; democrats, liberals, communists, and socialists all have waged brutal wars under their reigns. The only country to have used nuclear weapons in war was a democratic one (ours). Perhaps the worst war in history, World War I, had the full support of Europe's socialist parties, and communist governments waged war on neighboring reigns to expand their control.

This is because the State is driven towards war by the jockeying for power and wealth. War is profitable. That lust for profit drives businesses, and the governments they control, to press for wars, whether at home or in far off lands. The State tries to expand its power through the conquest of other nations, and the suppression of perceived threats to its pursuit of power. Governments use war to silence dissatisfaction through fear mongering, breaking apart communities, and cracking down on dissent. At its worst war sets examples people everywhere that if you try to build a freer and more just life for yourself, you and the place you live in will be senselessly tortured and destroyed.

Despite what we are told everyday, we are not powerless to stop this war and every war. It has not been voting, lobbying, or begging the powerful that has stopped wars. Our power is weakest in Washington. We do have the ability to stop the war, but with our work, our money, and our consent. Our government can't wage a war that we refuse to participate in, refuse to fund, and refuse to work for. Our task is to organize in our workplaces and communities to undermine their ability to wage war. We can do this through refusing to produce and circulate commodities that will be used in war. We can organize general strikes against the war to paralyze the financial machinery that is necessary to their war machine. Organizing together we can lead counter recruitment efforts in schools, with parents, and at community events. Those who refuse to fight in the military need our help, and we can make it easier for soldiers to make that choice. We can raise awareness of the casualties of the war and discontent through grassroots media.

In order to stop unjust wars once and for all, we need to build a movement that aims at getting rid of the root causes of war, an economy based on profit and the centralized power of governments. We can do this by acting directly as a collective democratic movement at our workplaces and communities. We can build directly democratic bodies that can fight these forces, and build a world of our own choosing. To effectively struggle we need to build social organizations founded on equality, freedom, and mutual aid. This is a road we will make by walking it. The Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA) is an organization that tries to help build this movement, and stands with others in common struggle and solidarity.

Contro la Guerra ed i profittatori della guerra?: Organizzarsi per la la Libertà!

La guerra in Iraq è una tragedia che è sempre più evidente a chiunque. La perdita di vite umane e l'enormità delle distruzioni causate dal governo degli USA e dai suoi alleati rasenta l'orrore. Questa guerra viene perpetuata nell'interesse dello Stato e del capitale, che trae direttamente profitti dalla guerra in Iraq, dato che per loro riveste importannza per diverse ragioni.Essa si colloca in una zona di importanza strategica per il predominio geografico e militare nel Medio Oriente.. Le risorse naturali dell'Iraq danno la misura di questa importanza, nonostante i costi che a breve termine una guerra potrebbe avere sulla produzione di petrolio. I costi della gierra per lo Stato sono grandi, sia in termini di costi economici che di calo di sostegno in Iraq e nel mondo. Tuttavia la conquista del potere e della ricchezza alimenta la loro guerra.

Questa guerra è priva di senso e non ha giustificazione, ma essa non è sfortunatanente nè l'unica nè un mero incidente. L'avvento dei governi democratici non ha fermato la guerra. Le guerre sono aumentate di numero, hanno fatto più morti e commesso più atrocità a partire dal parto gemellare del capitalismo e dei governi dal potere centralizzato..Non importa quale regime politico voi vi preferite; democratico, liberale, comunista, socialista, tutti hanno comunque fatte delle guerre. L'unico paese che ha fatto ricorso alle armi nuclerari in tempo di guerra è stato un paese democratico (il nostro). Non è fose vero che la peggiore guerra nella storia, la Prima Guerra Mondiale, aveva avuto l'appoggio dei partiti socialisti europei, e che i governi comunisti hanno fatto guerra ai paesi confinanti per espandere il loro controllo?.

Tutto questo accade perchè lo Stato tende alla guerra in virtù delle ragioni di potere e di ricchezza. La guerra significa profitti. Questa corsa al profitto induce il capitale ed i governi che esso controlla a spingere verso uno stato di guerra, sia interno che esterno in altre terre. Lo Stato cerca di espandere il suo potere attraverso la conquista di altre nazioni e la soppressione di ipotetiche minacce per la sua ricerca di potere. I governi usano la guerra per mettere a tacere l'nsoddisfazione attraverso la diffusione della paura, portando la divisione tra le persone nelle comunità, reprimendo il dissenso. Male che va, la guerra dice alla gente che se tu cerchi di costruire una vita più libera e più giusta, tu ed il posto in cui vivi siete destinati ad essere torturati e distrutti

Nonostante quello che ci viene ripetuto ogni giorno, non è vero che noi non abbiamo il potere per fermare questa guerra ed ogni altra guerra. Non sta nei voti, nè nell'attività lobbistica e nemmeno nelle preghiere, la forza che ha fermato le guerre. La nostra forza è debolissima a Washington. Noi abbiamo veramente la capacità di fermare la guerra, ma solo col nostro impegno, il nostro denaro, la nostra corenza. Il nostro governo non potrebbe condurre una guerra a cui noi ci rifiutassimo di partecipare, che rifiutassimo di finanziare e che rifiutassimo di sostenere.. Il nostro compito è quello di organizzarci nei luoghi di lavoro e nel territorio per minare queste scelte belliche. Possiamo fare questo rifiutando di produrre e di far circolare le merci che saranno usate per la guerra. Possiamo organizzare scioperi contro le guerre per paralizzare il meccanismo finanziario che alimenta le loro guerre. Organizzandoci insieme possiamo attivare un contro-reclutamento nelle scuole, con i genitori, e nei quartieri. Coloro i quali si rifiutano di andare in guerra, hanno bisogno della nostra solidarietà, così come aiutare i soldati a fare la stessa scelta. Possiamo suscitare la consapevolezza delle cause della guerra e diffondere il dissenso tramite i media di base.

Al fine di fermare le guerre una volta per tutte, è necessario costruire un movimento che punti a liberarsi delle cause alla radice della guerra, e cioè di un'economia basata sul profitto e sul potere centralizzato dei governi. Possiamo fare ciò agendo direttamente come movimento democratico collettivo nei luoghi di lavoro e nel territorio. Possiamo costruire direttamente organismi democratici che possano lottare contro queste forze e costruire un mondo scelto da noi stessi.. Per lottare con efficacia è necessario costruire organismi sociali basati sull'uguaglianza, sulla libertà e sul mutuo appoggio. Questa è la strada da percorrere. La Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA) è un'organizzazione che porta il suo contributo alla costruzione di tale movimento e che insieme ad altri lotta in comune ed in solidarietà.
