An attack on wages, a threat for customers

The planned merger of French energy firms Gaz de France (GdF) and Suez has been kick-started again by the French government. The privatization of GdF is thus well and truly on the way, contrary to what Nicolas Sarkozy had announced in 2004. This government is completely at the service of the French employers federation, the Medef, and it is to the Medef alone that it keeps its promises.

The Gaz de France-Suez merger: an attack on wages, a threat for customers

The planned merger of French energy firms Gaz de France (GdF) and Suez has been kick-started again by the French government. The privatization of GdF is thus well and truly on the way, contrary to what Nicolas Sarkozy had announced in 2004. This government is completely at the service of the French employers federation, the Medef, and it is to the Medef alone that it keeps its promises (such as the destruction of the right to strike, single contracts etc.).

By abandoning the energy sector to the market, Sarkozy is opening the way to the deregulation of tariffs, in unison with the European Commission, satisfying the thirst for shareholders' profits. Their requirement for profitability is threatening the social statute and rights of all wage workers and will inevitably lead to a rise in prices for consumers, worsening safety conditions and a poor quality service to the public. Access to energy is a basic right and we will defend it from the greed of shareholders.

The government and the bosses know only one language, the language of the street. United mobilization by workers and consumers will be a determining factor in defeating this process, defending and improving public services.
