Protest Caravans in Boeotia

Statement by the Press Office of the Federation of Anarchists of Greece (OAE) on the protest caravans in Boeotia against the devalorisation and destruction of the local environment.

Yes to human dignity!

In Sunday, 1 July 2007, three protest caravans (marches with cars, bikes, motorbikes etc.) took place in the prefecture of Boeotia against the projects by trusts of companies for the creation of polluting industries and the parallel devalorisation and destruction of the local and general environment.

The marches - by which it was aimed the uprising but also the participation of local residents in Boeotia - passed through the villages of Antikyra, Despina, Distomo, Steiri, Ellopia, Thisvi, Agia Paraskevi, Koroneia, Chaironeia, Agia Triada, Agios Georgios, Agia Anna as well as the capital of the prefecture Livadeia, finishing at the village of Kyriaki, in the heart of the Mount Helicon area, a truly beautiful and historical mountain, which is currently endangered by irreparable environmental destruction from the speculative plans of Capital and the State.

Eight factories for energy production (three in Antikyra, three in Thebes, one in Cheronia and two in Thisvi), extensions to the harbours of Thisvi and Agios Nikolaos and a without land-planning study placement of wind generators, all bring the region to its limits.

The region will become unexploitable for the purposes of tourism, ecologically inefficient, while there will also be unanticipated social consequences.

Therefore, in the square of Kyriaki local community organisations, heads of the villages, citizen committees, ecologists, and others, expressed our evident opposition to these projects as well as a reminder to those in charge that the struggle which began a few months ago will be continued in order to stop the devastation of the region, and the planet, thanks to these "investments".

The truth is that attendance was not as high as expected, but each beginning is difficult. Members of the O.A.E were there, participating as citizens, as locals from Boeotia and residents of planet Earth. They were not separated from the popular rally, nor did they engage this time in any autonomous action, making a realisation of our engagement for struggle on the side of the popular rights and demands and conscious unification with the community's struggles.

Given the beginning of this struggle with citizen participation, we call for vigilance and a more active participation.

No to indifference!

No to terrorism via the dissemination of fames about the supposed closure of these factories!

Yes to the struggle for a better environment!

Yes to human dignity!
