Workers at Preston Motors are entering into their week on strike seeking a modest wage rise. This week will see a dramatic escalation with a 24hour picket to stop all goods in and out of the site, we need your assistance.

Workers at Preston Motors in Melbourne are entering into their fourth week on strike seeking a decent EBA (Enterprise Bargaining Agreement) wage rise. Management has consistently refused to negotiate with the union in good faith over a new EBA after the old EBA expired in September 2006. The offer from management so far amounts to a wage freeze. “$4-a-week pay increase (to be paid in two lump sums), barely enough to cover a loaf of bread and carton of milk.” Recently even this pathetic offer was scaled down with management demanding compensation for losses incurred after forcing workers to go on strike.

Background

Over 30 workers working in the spare parts/stores section of Preston Motors began a strike on Tuesday, 13 March, over the company’s continued refusal to negotiate a fair wage increase. The National Union of Workers (NUW) and its members have been attempting to conclude a new Union Collective Agreement after the previous Agreement expired in September last year. Preston Motors at Dandenong & Geelong are also on strike.

Community Support

There have been a number of successful community assemblies over the past weeks that have prevented deliveries in and out of Preston Motors, Campbellfield. A 24-hour Community Assembly will be in place starting from Tuesday 7am, April 10th. We are asking supporters to make themselves available for 2-4 hour shifts on the picket.

Workers at Preston Motors can win

Although management at Preston Motors are publicly playing tough there are signs they maybe close to sitting down and negotiating with the union. Whether the workers can win will depend on how much support they received on the picket next week. You can make a difference get involved!
