Press release - Education Chapter of the AC-Interpro union

3rd March 2007

The Decree Law made by the Department of Education, to regulate the teaching profession (effectively creating 2 hierarchical categories of teacher) is an insult to teachers, but even more so to human rights, because it violates explicitly several fundamental, constitutionally acknowledged rights(*).

It is not a matter of "inability", in fact, but rather a political provocation to further humiliate teachers, functionaries and all workers for having dared to fight for their rights!

Only the government has approved the Career Statute for Teachers and Education Personnel. No other institutional body - neither the sovereign body for such matters (Parliament has yet to discuss or vote on the decree), nor the interested social parties, such as the 14 trade unions representing teachers, which unanimously continue to maintain a united front in rejecting the Statute (the "slavery statute", as it is generaly known).

This aberrant regulamentation, even considering the State laws, demands unity beyond professional boundaries - inter-professional unity. Once and for all. It is not only teachers' rights that are at stake, not merely civil servants' rights. It is the rights of all workers and therefore the whole population!
