Anarchist killed by the police in Bogotá, Colombia

category venezuela / colombia | repression / prisoners | news report author Thursday May 05, 2005 19:54author by Banderas Negras - ? Report this post to the editors

Bogotá -- As usual, this May Day there was a massive demonstration in Bogotá, Colombia. Hundreds of people from a diverse range of social movements took the streets to fight against capitalism. Walking along with the workers, there were a lot of young anarchists that agitated their black flags and shouted for freedom while hearing rock bands in a non-violent attitude.

Suddenly, when the demonstration reached one of the main streets of downtown Bogotá, the police started to throw tear gas to the anarchists without any reason. Soon there was an explosion and the police initiated a violent repression, hitting people with wooden sticks and shooting rubber bullets in all directions. In this moment a 15 year old, who was walking inside the anarchist block, was badly beaten up by various policemen. Nicolás David Neira Alvares was then surrounded by these savages and was beaten up until he lost conscience. Various comrades came to the rescue and they were able to take Nicolás to a hospital in the Westside of Bogotá. After that, he was taken to another hospital were he is still in critical conditions. He has a strong head trauma and minor contusions in his body. He was hit so hard in the head, that for now he can?t be operated. As it is expected, none of this reached the press.

In addition to this horrible event, there at least six people wounded with rubber bullets, one person wounded by ?an explosive of dispersion? thrown by the police and various people received beatings in their heads, faces and bodies. Right now the unions and the anarchists are trying to organize a public sue, but there is the immediate need of an international divulgation of these events in order to denounce this hideous atrocity made by the police.

Today the doctors announced the death of Nicolás David Neira Alvares, a 15 year old who was marching in the anarchist block the past 1st of May. Like never before in the past few years, many young people decided to come together to protest against capitalism. The huge demonstration which included union workers, farmers, students, unemployed people and activists, marched in a non-violent manner on one of the main streets of Bogotá.

The demonstration not only remembered those who were killed by the State in Chicago, but also denounced the current precarious economical and social conditions of Colombia, demanded a halt to the Free Trade Treatise and made public the atrocities that are being committed by the current fascist government. Atrocities that also occurred this day when the ESMAD (police) started to throw tear gas without any reason, and after one explosion, initiated a violent repression hitting the protesters with wooden sticks and rubber bullets. It was precisely during this repression that various people were severely injured, including Nicolás who was beaten up on the head by the police until he lost consciousness. Approximately 8 policemen surrounded Nicolás and covered themselves with masks impeding the remaining protesters to see their faces and to rescue him from their hands.

After sometime, Nicolás was finally taken by some comrades to a Hospital in the Westside of Bogotá. There he waited for some hours until he was taken to the Salud Coop Hospital were he remained in critical conditions until today.

During this week, many people tried to denounce the situation, writing articles in the alternative media, helping the family, organizing a public sue and protesting in the streets. It is now known that many of these persons are being harassed by the police. Right now the media are covering the whole affair by trying to hide the real facts. The ESMAD are saying that they never beat the protesters.

The sad death of Nicolás and the violent repression done by the police is the consequence of this unjust system that seeks to silence all those voices that are trying to create a world of freedom and equality. All this information must be urgently known and divulgated. We don’t want to stay silent.

Opinion on lack of significant response.
As of several days of the event very little in the UK has been organised to mark the killing of this young anarchist.

Is it because this happened so far away in an alien country that we seem to be so nonchalant about this murder? Is it because we are so sectarian towards each other in our own country that to organise an effective response to this seems beyond our capabilities?

We need to address this urgently.

Our recent response to the deaths of anarchists like Carlo Guiliani, the imprisonment of anarchists such as Mark Barnsley and Simon Chapman and the Thessaloniki prisoners, left much to be desired. European comrades were far more in touch with what was going on than we were, despite them having a language barrier in Mark’s case. Do we need to learn to speak Greek or Spanish to somehow get to grips with simple facts? Our comrades are being killed and imprisoned and each time this happens our response should be swift, effective and if need be ‘aggressive’. Sitting back and being ‘shocked’ each time something like this happens is ludicrous. These people are prepared to kill us.

In terms of the Columbian situation, the Embassy and all business that have anything to do with Colombia should have instantly been targets for our anger and anarchists should be in the forefront of such action especially in terms of encouraging all groups immeadietly to get together and collectively act.

There is no excuse anymore.

It’s time we learn from our comrades abroad that the old adage still applies…

'An injury to one is an injury to all!’

Today a group of anarchist protestors marched through downtown Portland carrying a mock casket in honor of Nicolas Ddavid Neira Alvares, a 15-year old anarchist beaten to death by police in Bogota, Columbia on may day.

The turn-out was small, but focused, and began at pioneer square and made its way through downtown--blocking the bus here and the streets here and there--and to the Saturday marketplace, and then down 1st Avenue to the world trade center, where the casket was left at the door under the guard of a security officer who raised his fist in solidarity with the marchers when they arrived.

As vibrant South American music played through a loudspeaker and various speakers keeping the marchers hungry, passers-by joined the march for a time and people watching voiced their support.

Text from the flyer that was passed out:

"After suffering for 7 days in critical condition from severe head trauma and contusions in his body, Nicolas David Neira Alvares died at age 15. He was brutally beaten by 8 policemen in Bogota, Columbia, and left to die. Like many others around the world, Nicolas had participated in a May Day march to commemorate the struggle for workers rights and the 8 hour work day, and the Haymarket martyrs of Chicago. According to accounts there was music and dancing in Bogota on May Day. As the march reached the downtown area, cops suddenly opened fire with tear gas and rubber bullets. Exploiting the chaos that ensued, the cops charged into the crowd brutally beating people. They singled out Nicolas, a 15 yr. old male anarchist and beat him into unconsciousness. Many bravely attempted to interfere to rescue him. Nicolas Alvares was taken to the Salud Coop Hospital but the trauma was so extensive that they were unable to operate to save him. Many other marchers were severely injured. The survivors are planning to come together to sue. Through the efforts of independent media sources the story has gotten out and the Colombian media has been forced to give it mention. But more international support is needed to help these cases to be taken seriously. Those of us within the United States must speak up against this murdering of dissent. The United States government, military contractors, CIA, and corporate interests support the extreme right wing in Columbia, arming the paramilitaries and massacring resistance to environmental and labor exploitation. It is time for the PEOPLE within the US to stand against it, and to ally ourselves with those who work and dream of a better world for all people. Write or call the Colombian Embassy!"

25-30 anarchists demonstrated in London against the police murder of 15-year old anarchist in Bogota , Colombia

On Wednesday May 18th the Anarchist Federation ( London ) caled for a picket of he Colombian Consulate in London following the murder of a 15-year old anarchist in Bogota , Colombia on a May Day march.

5 of us went into the Consultate right at the start, leafletted staff and visitors (of which there were hardly any) then left the building.

A good 25-30 people turned out in total, with black flags and a banner condemning Nicolas' murder. Passers by and visitors were leafletted for about 2 hours, raising the issue. The text of the leaflet (about 200 handed out) follows:

Nicolas lives. Our ideals and struggle will never die

Today, we are protesting for the brutal murder of Nicolas Neira , beaten to death by members of the ESMAD (anti riot police) during the Mayday demonstration in Bogota , Colombia .

Nicolas, only fifteen years old, was beaten by these murderers until he received such a severe brain damage that he died, after spending some days in a coma. This brutal deed can not remain unpunished! It is evident that the Colombian state is an acting part of the situation of violence that the civil population is suffering.

The recent massacre of San Jose de Apartado , in which the army slaughtered 8 members of the peace community, is another example of this. The state proves true to its repressive nature. And its mercenaries, in the army and the police, are playing their role of ending all dissidence.

However, the social movement calling for a peaceful Colombia is getting stronger every day. The civil population is making clear that neither the army, the guerillas nor the paramilitary are answering their desires for social justice.

In this situation, organized anarchism is growing in Colombia . And in this situation the cops used a fifteen years old child to send a message to everyone hoping for a peaceful and free country. A message of death and fear..

But our dreams, our desires can not be killed. After years of terror and fear the need for peace, the yearnings for social justice cannot be kept back any more. We are together in this struggle with our Colombian comrades, because we too are part of this dream. The dream of a world without place for deeds like this.

Our solidarity comes too late for Nicolas. We can only hope that his death is not left unpunished. We can only hope that there won't be any need for a concentration like this any more. Peace, liberty, social justice..

Anarchy in Colombia .
