The 4th annual Melbourne Anarchist Bookfair is an opportunity for all people to read, listen, discuss, share skills and knowledge workshops and talks, socialise and partake in a diverse range of activities around political, cultural, environmental and social justice issues.

The bookfair, part of a global network of around 100 bookfairs, is a free event held annually at the Abbotsford Convent (St Heliers Street, Abbotsford).

In 2014, it will take place from 10am-6pm on Saturday the 9th of August.

The organising collective hopes 2014 will continue to build on ideas and welcome broader audience and participation.

Over 40 bookstores, zine distributors, independent publishers and other groups participate each year in the day-long event, which is family friendly and includes a kid’s space and a cultural program with poetry and music.

Workshops run all day, on a diverse range of topics from indigenous sovereignty, land rights and colonialism, to gender and sexuality, feminism, environmentalism, workplace organising, art and global events to anarchism itself.

The Melbourne bookfair was the first of its kind in Australia when it commenced in 2011, and has since been accompanied by bookfairs in Sydney and New Zealand.

Selected principles:

The Melbourne Anarchist Bookfair Collective affirms and promotes values of mutual aid, direct and participatory democracy, anti-authoritarianism, autonomy and solidarity.

We oppose capitalism, imperialism, patriarchy, heterosexism, queer/transphobia, ableism, racism, colonialism, statism and all other forms of oppression; anyone that perpetuates or promotes these attitudes is not welcome at the bookfair.

Recognising the colonisation of this land, we work to include indigenous people and information about indigenous struggles in the bookfair.

It strives to promote anarchist ideas through workshops as well as the bookfair itself, be that the introduction of these ideas to the public, or the elaboration of these ideas and dialogue between anarchist tendencies. We have a spirit of openness towards the different traditions, visions, and practices of anarchism.

We do not accept the participation of political parties or groups affiliated with political parties at the bookfair.
