 This post- Melbourne Anarchist bookfair conversation took place in the Melbourne Anarchist Club (MAC) which has a history stretching back to the 1890s. While visiting the premises which contains a library, meeting space and infoshop I caught up with Brendan and Ben two active members of the collective and Kieran from Anarchist Affinity which is seeking to build a similar organisation to the WSM, based on theoretical and tactical unity and collective responsibility. Topics discussed included the history of MAC, opinions on the third Melbourne bookfair, struggles engaged in by anarchists, and the potential for building a viable anarchist movement in Australia. A couple of hundred people attended the Anarchist Bookfair this year in Melbourne. Stalls ranged from a variety of anarchist groups and other campaigns including animal rights, prisoner support and unions. People came from across Australia and beyond. Meetings ranged from fighting neo-liberalism to sexuality, "witchcraft", fighting austerity and resistance across the globe. I contributed to a panel discussion on austerity in Ireland with a live link-up with Turkish anarchists discussing the recent rising there. Notes: The Melbourne Anarchist Club was officially founded on 1 May 1886 by David Andrade and others breaking away from the Australasian Secular Association of Joseph Symes, the journal "Honesty" being the anarchist club's official organ, and anarchism became a significant minor current on the Australian left. The current included a diversity of views on economics, ranging from an individualism influenced by Benjamin Tucker to the anarchist communism of J. A. Andrews. All regarded themselves as broadly "socialist" however. The Anarchists mixed with the seminal literary figures Henry Lawson and Mary Gilmore and the labour journalist and utopian socialist William Lane. The most dramatic event associated with this early Australian anarchism was perhaps the bombing of the "non-union" ship SS Aramac on 27 July 1893 by Australian anarchist and union organiser Larrie Petrie. This incident occurred in the highly charged atmosphere following the defeat of the 1890 Australian maritime dispute and the 1891 Australian shearers' strike, an atmosphere which also produced the Sydney-based direct action group the "Active Service Brigade". Petrie was arrested for attempted murder but charges were dropped after a few months. He later joined Lane's "New Australia" utopian experiment in Paraguay.'

We don’t support running in elections or campaigning for them, but some Socialists are wasting their resources doing just that. Because none of them are in any danger of being elected this time around, the MACG considers that it’s possible to give them a principled vote (though it would be different if any might win – they would have to pass the test above). Such a vote is symbolic: you’re putting up your hand for Socialism and against capitalism. It’s a small gesture which you can make without compromising yourself. But we still think it was a mistake for honest Socialists to run. The struggle for a new world has been a long one and has been contributed to by countless individuals and organisations in that time. While the path often seems long and sometimes hopeless we believe that a new world is not just possible, but necessary for our survival. We hope that with this new organisation we like so many before us can play a part in making this vision become reality. As many of you know, Jack 'The Anarchist' Grancharoff died on the 15th of May, at his home in Quaama, South Coast of New South Wales, Australia, aged 91. He died 'with his boots on' - he seemed to have risen from a chair, with an open book and a glass of something interesting on the table, collapsed onto the floor and was found a day or two later. The Platform - Magazine of Anarchist Affinity from Melbourne The 4th annual Melbourne Anarchist Bookfair is an opportunity for all people to read, listen, discuss, share skills and knowledge workshops and talks, socialise and partake in a diverse range of activities around political, cultural, environmental and social justice issues. The bookfair, part of a global network of around 100 bookfairs, is a free event held annually at the Abbotsford Convent (St Heliers Street, Abbotsford). In 2014, it will take place from 10am-6pm on Saturday the 9th of August. This is a call-out to independent booksellers, zinesters, activist groups and individuals who would like to run a stall or a workshop at this year's Bookfair. Over the past 4 years, the Melbourne Anarchist Bookfair has gathered hundreds of people from Melbourne and beyond to share ideas, attend workshops and strengthen networks. In the past we have had info and discussions covering topics such as Anarchism, Aboriginal and Indigenous Sovereignty, Land Rights and Colonialism, Sexism and Gender, Feminism, Justice, Sexual Assault, Workplace Struggles, Community Spaces, Environmental Action and much more. The labour movement in Melbourne, though far declined from its former strength, has neither totally given up the ghost nor been allowed quarter by its enemies. Unions campaign for health and safety, against insecure work and against the use of temporary work visas to undermine labour standards. The campaigns, though, are undermined by the conservatism and timidity of the union officials, their support for the Labor Party and their nationalist focus on “Aussie jobs”, which interferes with building the necessary solidarity between local workers and super-exploited migrant workers. Meanwhile, the capitalists are proceeding with legislation to destroy the construction workers' union (CFMEU) and bring the entire union movement under close State supervision.
The first task of any small political group is to understand the situation in which they seek to operate. Understanding the economic, political and social situation in a given society shows a political group the way forward; it allows us to identify what opportunities exist, what challenges we are likely to encounter, and what our capacity is likely to be in responding to these.
During the famous Philippine revolution against Spain there were prominent intellectuals and key persons to the revolution who were briefly influenced by the anarchists in the west. Recently, there was an anarchist network organised in the big area of Manila
