[Français] Théo RivalSyndicalistes et libertaires.Une histoire de l'UTCL (1974-1991)éd. Alternative libertaire, 2013, 316 pages, €12.In 1976, a group of young workers was expelled from the Organisation Révolutionnaire Anarchiste (ORA) and created the Union des Travailleurs Communistes Libertaires (UTCL). They were supporters of a form of trade-unionism based on direct action and soon found themselves heavily involved in the resistance to the shift within the Confédération Française Démocratique du Travail (CFDT). In the '80s, when the ebb in social struggles proved to be fatal for part of the far left, the UTCL was instead able to survive by linking its fortunes to that part of the left within the CFDT which, in the spirit of May 1968, would go on to create the SUD unions (Solidaires Unitaires Démocratiques). From the huge strikes in 1974 to the birth of a coordination of strikers in 1986, recounting the history of the UTCL is like having a good slice of the workers' movement's history as a backdrop. Thanks to this research into the UTCL, which taps into previously unexplored CFDT archives, this study seeks to identify the role played by this original revolutionary current, syndicalist and libertarian at one and the same time. * * * The book contains four valuable appendices:
The book will be launched by the author and several former UTCL members during the Self-Management Fair at Montreuil on Saturday 8 June at 5 pm (Seine-Saint-Denis).

This organization, which lasted for 17 years, had made strenous efforts to maintain a libertarian orientation in the class struggle of its day. But before becoming an organization as such, the UTCL was a tendency with the ORA. In the wake of 1968, the ORA had attracted numerous young people who were put off by the Leninist, Trotskyist and Maoist organizations. Georges Fontenis, 1920–2010 Sep 14 0 comments With the death of Georges Fontenis, we have lost one of the leading figures in the postwar revolutionary movement in France. He played an important role in the reconstruction and reform of the French anarchist movement, and in supporting those fighting for Algerian independence in the 1950s and 60s; a prominent activist in May 68, he would go on to help (re)create a libertarian communist movement in the 1970s; he was also in later life one of the pillars of the ‘Libre Pensée’ (Free Thought) movement; having joined the Union of Libertarian Communist Workers (UTCL) in 1980, he would subsequently become a member of Alternative Libertaire, and would remain a member until his death at the age of 90. Mar 18 Various anarchist organisations 12 comments This year marks the 150th anniversary of the first modern social revolution in the glorious history of oppressed people's struggle, the Paris Commune of 1871. For 72 days, the proletarians of the city of Paris re-organised the social relationships in terms of direct democracy, towards the direction of economic equality, mutual aid and political freedom. |
