Video from the recent Housing is a Human Right march in Rochester, NY. Creating an Eviction Free ZoneThe housing movement has been exemplified in Rochester, both because of the increasing rates of foreclosure and homelessness, as well as the community generated response to it. As part of their moratorium campaign, the Metro Justice Housing Committee and Take Back the Land Rochester called for a Housing is a Human Right march to bring together groups in a coalition in the streets. With groups like Rochester Red & Black, Band of Rebels, SEIU Local 200 United, and others, they rallied together and took on City Hall to show solidarity in the face of a persistent unity between the local government and the large banks. The march coincided with the release of the final proposal from the Metro Justice Housing Committee, which calls for a moratorium on police involvement in the execution of evictions from foreclosures. This would put a halt to the onslaught of financial violence that is going on in several areas of the city, leaving streets filled with empty houses while the shelters are overflowing. This defensive measure would assure that the city is not complicit with the fraud of the large mortgage lenders, and instead act in the interests of the citizenry. What is more important about this was a chance to bring together people joining the housing movement. Together this organizing requires a number of tactics, demands, and strategies that will work in concert so that we can begin to prefigure the kind of housing that is community controlled rather than up to the crisis of the marketplace.
