Report from 40th anniversary of Bloody Sunday March

category ireland / britain | community struggles | news report author Thursday February 02, 2012 18:56author by Sean Matthews & Sean Dubh - WSM & Derry Anarchists Report this post to the editors

Despite the opposition of the governing SInn Fein party, relatives of families of the victims of Bloody Sunday and political supporters, including Irish anarchists, marched in remembrance last Saturday. A report from the anarchists present and a background to the issues behind those determined to continue the annual commemoration. [Italiano]

A few thousand people took part in the 40th anniversary Bloody Sunday march demanding real truth and justice after the publishing of the Saville report this year which confirmed that the massacre was ’unjustifiable and unjustified.’

This years march clearly divided the families and relatives of the Bloody Sunday Trust with the majority deciding to end the march with some pressure being concerted by Sinn Fein. Despite attempts by the political class to co-opt and de-radicalise the march and brush it under the carpet as part of the new shiny image of Northern Ireland there was a better than expected turnout, the Irish Times estimated 3,000 took part. Derry anarchists and the WSM were present along with a host of political and social organisations including the Independent Workers Union.

The march ended with the traditional rally at Free Derry Corner without any politicians speaking instead relatives of the victims spoke. The speakers referred to the fact that the Saville enquiry only confirmed what they already knew - which was that their family members were innocent and they questioned the lack of prosecutions which is allowing those who gave the orders on the day to get away with murder. The continuing unjust selective internment of Martin Corey, Marian Price and the ongoing degradation of republican prisoners at Maghaberry was also highlighted, along with the systematic lack of social housing, unemployment and cuts to services which our local politicians are trying to sweep under the carpet.

The rally organisers pledged that the march will continue providing a focal point for those who suffer injustice and oppression anywhere. For anarchists, we can expect little justice from the state and capital which is the greatest practitioner of state terrorism and violence. Its needs to be destroyed root and branch with a new society that benefits all.

Leaflet distributed at the march by social justice activists and feminists.

Today we march in solidarity with all the Bloody Sunday family members and those who are organising the March for Justice.

We also march in solidarity with the mothers of Plaza de Mayo in Argentina who since 1976 are campaigning to hold to account those responsible for the disappearance of their sons and daughters during military repression in the country;
with the women in the Middle East and beyond who, through non-violent protests, resist the imperialist aggression which is tearing apart their families and communities and ignores their sovereignty as a people;
with the indigenous women who fight displacement and land deprivation against a capitalist corporation economy, and who argue the limitations of international law;with all those women worldwide who employ civil disobedience as a legitimate weapon to challenge the structures of power that violates their and their fellow citizens human rights, knowing that reprisals will be hardest on them just because they are female, and more likely to suffer social marginalisation and sexual violence;
with all those incarcerated for their beliefs, noncompliance and nonconformity.

Today we march in solidarity because their struggle is our struggle.

Campaigning for justice is not an isolated issue or individual protest around the world, it is an attempt to overthrow the tyranny of power and to call for a world in which truth, justice, human dignity and political freedom are celebrated, a world in which women, the oppressed, the dispossessed and the indigenous people are all free individuals within a collective of equals.

The issues which brought civil rights protesters out on the streets of Derry in 1972 continue to be issues for a new generation. Throughout its forty years, the march has raised a voice nationally and internationally for a better world. We hear that voice. Listen to the cry!

jobstownjoan.jpg imageIrish state fails in bid to frame community activists for false imprisonment 23:27 Fri 30 Jun by Various 0 comments

Six men were on trial accused of falsely imprisoning the then Tanáiste (deputy Prime Minister) and Labour Party TD, Joan Burton, and her colleague in Jobstown, a working class suburb of Dublin, on 15 November 2014. The charge of false imprisonment carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. All six men claimed that they were exercising their right to protest, and that the protest was peaceful. This was part of a mass campaign that successfully defeated the attempt to introduce water charges. Following a nine week trial, the six have been found not guilty.

The Irish government's attempt to introduce domestic water charges in Ireland is not going well. In fact, for them it's been a disaster because it's sparked off a huge upsurge in working class self organisation and direct action. Saturday saw thousands of anti-water charges campaigners flooding the streets of Dublin o to again voice their opposition to Irish Water & water charges and as a show of strength for the movement.

A huge secretive Garda security operation last night swung into operation in Dublin Port as Shell's Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) left the port as part of a huge convoy of Garda vehicles. News of the operation had leaked at the last minute meaning that with only an hours notice a handful of Shell to Sea campaigners managed to get down to the port entrance despite the pouring rain. Most of us were pulled over and questioned by Garda at least once and the Garda helicopter stayed overhead as various Garda vehicles including a van load of riot cops with the door open drove past us repeatedly.

Saturday's National Rally against the Household Tax in the National Stadium was literally filled to overflowing. As well as nearly 3,000 people crammed into every possible space in the Stadium another 4 to 500 were in the car park at the side, unable to fit into the building. And the thousands who attended were angry, energized and expectant of victory. The National Stadium normally hosts boxing marches but the atmosphere on Saturday topped that of watching a home fighter coming out on top in a close fought bout.

textDublin: The eviction of the Occupy Dame Street camp 22:19 Thu 08 Mar by Andrew Flood 0 comments

A large force of Garda and council workers were deployed at 3.30am today, International Women's Day, to clear Occupy Dame Street (ODS) camp. The camp was completely demolished in the course of the eviction, campers intimidated and their personal property stolen. This was a level of force way out of proportion with the numbers in the camp (about 15 people) and stands in contrast with the lack of resources put into investigating what happened at Anglo, the collapse of which has left a debt of 26,000 Euro on every single person in the country.   [Italiano]

textDetailed account of Shell's prosecution of 19 more people for ongoing resistance in Erris, Ireland 22:14 Thu 08 Mar by anon 0 comments

The end of February saw 19 Shell to Sea campaigners, including a WSM member, being prosecuted on 80 charges for civil disobediance against Shell's decade long attempt to impose an experimental high pressure raw gas pipeline on the communities of Erris.  Over 8,000 euro in fines were handed down by this special sitting of the Belmullet court and Shell to Sea spokesperson Terence Conway was given two 3-month prison sentences under section 8 of the Public Order Act for blocking the road on two seperate occasions, a 'crime' that anyone following the struggle will be aware Shell's private security company committs three times a day with the co-operation of the Gardai. householdtax.jpg imageThe Household Tax: Don’t Register, Don’t Pay 00:30 Sat 28 Jan by ? 0 comments

Mid-December saw the eventual publication of the long-threatened household tax legislation. The first three months of 2012 will present every household in Ireland with a choice: whether to succumb to this new home tax, which along with the proposed water tax will rise to approx €1,200 per annum within a couple of years, or to refuse to register, refuse to pay and make a stand against the costs of bailing out bankers and developers continuing to be hoisted on our shoulders.

We can contact other local groups wherever they are and make our campaign bigger and nationwide. We can win the price war. Nowadays, organising ourselves and creating campaigns are much easier than thirty years ago during the poll tax era. New technology and social media platforms have given us more opportunities to call and contact people, whilst providing more and better skills to plan and organise.

textIn Ireland Jobstown not Guilty verdict points to a Garda conspiracy Jul 21 by Andrew 0 comments

The outraged media reaction to a jury doing its job and finding the Jobstown defendants not guilty is quite extraordinary. Rather than do the right thing and launch an investigation as to how 180 cops could produce evidence that was directly contradicted by video evidence, the media have gone on a rant against Twitter! Rather than finding it suspicious that nearly 3 million in public funds was spent by the DPP on a case that any proper check of available evidence should have indicated was never likely to convince a jury, the media suggest instead that the problem lay in the exact charges brought. The trial was part of a large scale state operation to suppress a mass anti-austerity community campaign.
