1st Internal Educational Seminar of the Fórum do Anarquismo Organizado - South-East Region

On 21 and 22 January 2012, the Fórum do Anarquismo Organizado (Forum of Organized Anarchism - FAO) represented by their organizations in the South-East (the Federação Anarquista do Rio de Janeiro and the Organização Anarquista Socialismo Libertário from São Paulo) - organized an internal educational seminar for the South-East Region. Held at the premises of the Centre for Social Culture of Rio de Janeiro, the seminar brought together collectives in the process of joining the FAO and individuals interested in organizing or joining existing member organizations, as well as the FARJ and the OASL. In attendance were militants from the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Paraná, and achieved a threefold purpose: to strengthen the process in existing member organizations, encourage the creation of new organizations or nuclei, and to integrate this set of individuals, groups and organizations who are interested in building especifista anarchism in Brazil into a common process led by the FAO.

About 50 people from the following cities and regions attended the event: Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Baixada Fluminense, São Paulo (capital), Baixada Santista, Ribeirão Preto, Mogi das Cruzes, Belo Horizonte, Montes Claros, Grande Vitória, Cachoeiro de Itapemirim and Curitiba. The event was organized autonomously by the OASL and the FARJ, with the cooperation of all the participants in an environment of mutual aid and solidarity, which enabled both adequate infrastructure (accomodation, meals, cleaning, etc.) and a high level of discussion.

The event began on Saturday morning, with a reception for participants, followed by a welcome presentation, which highlighted the relevance of the organizational process of anarchism in Brasil today and the need for this process to be strengthened in the South-East Region.

The objective of the first module of the educational, "Theory and History", was to raise questions on the birth and history of anarchism, which the FAO views as an ideology linked to political practice of a revolutionary nature. Beginning with the formation of the libertarian current, we discussed the concept of anarchism and its strategies (the historical forms of its ideology), ranging from Proudhon's mutualism to the Spanish Revolution, by way of Bakunin, the International and the Alliance, the anarchist communism of Kropotkin and Malatesta, propaganda by the action and tactical individualism, revolutionary syndicalism and anarcho-syndicalism, the Paris Commune, syndicalism in Brazil, Magonism and the Mexican Revolution, and the Russian Revolution.

The second module, "Organization", presented the basic concepts of anarchist organization - what it is, its objectives, operational methods and functions, the differences with other models of political organization, organizational documents (Declaration of Principles, Statutes and Programme), its activities, structural models, fronts and offices, the logic of concentric circles, the decision-making process, and the qualities of militants. Later, there was further discussion on the Statutes of an organization, and a sample was studied by participants so that they could see its content, and thus be able to develop a similar document in their own locality.

After viewing two videos by Bucaneiro Produções which show social work in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the third module, "Social Work", began. Its aim was to further study methods of work at grassroots level, and dealt with the following areas: the art of social work; the system of domination and its class structure; the differences between work carried out by internal agents (people who live, work or study where the social work is carried out) and external agents (who do not live, work or study in the same place); different models for acting, including the notions of and differences between an acting minority and a vanguard; the best practical ways to initiate and continue work; popular education, etc.

The evening featured the launch of the book "Ideologia e Estratégia" by a comrade of the FAO, and also a cultural presentation of hip-hop groups in the outskirts of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Liberdade e Revolução and Us Neguin q ñ c kala, as well as an intervention by the group Anarcofunk from Belo Horizonte.

The second day began with a brief discussion on theory and method of analysis that sought to fill certain gaps identified on the first day. After that, we held a group session in order to examine/troubleshoot hypothetical problems in concrete social activism. In addition to the militants present sharing their experiences, the group session gave participants the theoretical and practical know-how that would allow them to further their social work in progress or initiate new work.

Continuing with more by way of practical activities, the OASL and the FARJ presented their work carried out in their various social fronts (urban social movements, Movimento Sem Terra/anarchism and nature, community, student). The event concluded with a debate that touched on organizational issues and the next steps for strengthening the FAO in the South-East.

For all those present, anarchism in Brazil in general and specifically the especifist current, is experiencing a unique moment since the end of the military dictatorship. The process of the FAO itself, which this year completes its tenth year of existence, has given anarchism a quantitative and qualitative leap since 2007, when we were able to bring together and gradually involve the whole especifist anarchist movement in Brazil. Our presence today in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Alagoas and Mato Grosso can be further expanded in 2012 to Santa Catarina, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Ceará and Pernambuco. The 10th anniversary of the FAO will be marked by an unprecedented event, in which the organization will be further solidified, taking us one more step towards the construction of a national process.

We understand that this is not a quick process and that it must rely on the collective contribution of all if we are to refine our theory and practice, which for us are inseparable. While on the one hand, we see an increase in social work, where we are involved in different sectors (trade unions, landless movement, small farmers, the homeless, the unemployed, trash collectors, students, the community, the indigenous and Maroons, gender), on the other hand there is great progress on theoretical debate, with theoretical and ideological elements being taken from classical and contemporary authors that take account of a method of analysis and a strategy that can drive our revolutionary project for social transformation.

We believe, with all due modesty, that we have been able to bring anarchism back into the field of class struggle and into the popular movements that are trying to create a strong people, which will be able to take the leading role in their own struggles and the process of their own emancipation. The 1st Internal Educational of the FAO in the South-East Region, along with those held in the South [http://www.anarkismo.net/article/20167] and North-East [http://www.anarkismo.net/article/21040], demonstrate the maturity and the will of militants, who have overcome the difficulties of a country of continental dimensions and who are working towards the realization of libertarian socialism.

Build the FAO!
Ethics, commitment, freedom!
Struggle, create, popular power!

This article – almost fully extracted from my book Teoria Bakuniniana do Estado [Bakuninian Theory of the State] – aims to realize a brief discussion on the theory of social classes and bureaucracy elaborated by Mikhail Bakunin in his anarchist period. What are the criteria that define the social classes? Which are the social classes? Are there dominant and oppressed classes? How can class struggle be defined? What is bureaucracy? How does it relate to other social strata? These are some of the questions the text tries to answer.

imageBrazil: Elements For a Historical Reconstitution of Our Current Jan 10 by OASL / FARJ 1 comments

Ten years of the Forum of Organised Anarchism (Fórum do Anarquismo Organizado – FAO) were commemorated with the foundation of the Brazilian Anarchist Coordination (Coordenação Anarquista Brasileira – CAB), uniting organisations from nine states around especifista anarchism as well as others that are progressively approaching and deepening organisational ties with us. In this text, we present a first contribution, with a few elements for a historical reconstitution of our current, that is, anarchism of the especifista matrix, in Brazil. We hope that other contributions can help boost it or, possibly, correct the information presented here.

"Towards a Libertarian Theory of Power" is a series of elaborated reviews about books or articles by authors from the libertarian camp who discuss power. Its objective is to present a contemporary literature of authors who treat the theme in question and contribute elements for the elaboration of a libertarian theory of power, that could contribute to the elaboration of a method of analysis of reality and of strategies of libertarian basis, to be utilised by individuals and organisations. In the days of June, in Rio de Janeiro, organised anarchism in Brazil will experience its greatest contemporary historical event. The Anarchist Congress, that will bring together groups from about 10 states across the country in debates, agreements and resolutions to act with common principles and tactics on the Brazilian reality, has a very special significance. Our conviction, in a more than 10 year process, says that militant anarchism holds indispensable contributions to the struggles for anti-capitalist social change. The meeting of militant forces that embody the same concept of work in co-ordination is a fundamental step in the journey of building political organisation that doesn’t just start now. [Português]
