The new Ghanouchi government, formed the evening of January 27, following the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman to Tunis, has started its project for a vast and brutal repression of the leading forces of the Tunisian Revolution. Indeed, this Friday January 28, the anti-popular forces launched an attack against hundreds of militants and citizens who, coming from several areas of the country within the framework of the Liberation Caravan, have since Sunday 23 January occupied Government Square in the Kasbah. This occupation had caused a great spirit of solidarity and enthusiasm among the popular strata and the youth who, each day, went to the area in their tens of thousands. The occupiers, organized in a coordinating committee, had decided this Friday January 28, under eminently democratic conditions, to prolong the occupation of the square. The response of the new Ghanouchi government was not delayed: under a tear-gas and baton attack, the occupants were forced to leave the square, and many of them were hospitalized. Dislodged from Government Square, the occupiers went to protest on Bourguiba Avenue, joined and applauded by passers-by; the police force again made use of tear-gas against the peaceful demonstrators.
