The following statement was adopted at the recent WSA Continental Conference, May 2010.

W.S.A. Inter-organizational relations Statement

The Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA) reaffirms our commitment to fostering mutual respect and building good, solid and cooperative inter-organizational relations between North American and international class struggle anarchists.

WSA is mindful and respectful of the autonomy of each of our North American allies. While recognizing this autonomy, differences in history and traditions, WSA seeks to engage our allies in the most constructive and meaningful manner while maintaining our own organizational integrity. WSA affirms our commitment to building the Class Struggle Anarchist Conference and other such forums for dialogue and cooperation. We seek to further respectful and comradely dialogue and discussion between the various groups and organizations which make up the diverse North American class struggle anarchist tendency that exists today.

We are further committed to seeking to build on the initial work of the Inter-Organizational Labor/Labour Working Group and other area specific Working Groups (such as housing & anti-eviction). By working together in areas where we have similar activity or interests, we can share experiences, use limited resources wisely, create greater opportunities for solidarity and to build an autonomous workers movement.

WSA looks forward to another year at inter-organizational cooperation and relationship building based on mutual respect and comradeship.

Just some brief comments on the 2010 WSA Conference. A fuller report to follow later.

By all accounts the conference was a success. This was the first full conference since 2006.

Having been to most of the WSA conferences over the past 25 years, this one of the best ones to date. The turnout was good, though a few folks we hoped would be there couldn't make it. The conference also marked a crucial and important time in the WSA's history. The membership and those attending were overwhelming newer members, thus completing the bridge between the founding and/or longer time members and a whole new generation of anarchist militants.

At the conference members representing all geographical regions were present. Members attended from the south, west coast, northeast, Midwest and Edmonton, Canada.

WSA has approximately. 50 members who are in different stages of dues payment. I would say that our real paid and active membership is less than that number. Membership at this point is becoming a bit more concentrated and less scattered over wide areas (the latter always posing a challenge to WSA). Perhaps, during a period of consolidation, some of those numbers will fall, with those least interested in participating falling off. Obviously we hope that whatever fall-off there will be compensated with efforts at local branch building (one of our goals). Currently branches exist in some form or another in Minneapolis,MN, Hartford,CT, Pennsacola, FL, San Fran.-Bay Area (CA), Southern Cal (a sort of regionalized branch with members scattered over a wide area), Edmonton, Can., Lansing, MI and the NY-NJ area. I hope I haven't forgotten any place.

While there are clearly signs of growth and development, my own cautious side reminds me, that with a blink of the eye you can grow quickly and fall just as quickly. The key is to try to take all the positive energy, the good proposals and find a way to implement those proposals in a meaningful and workable fashion. As the past couple of years have been key to growing WSA, the next year will be crucial in membership consolidation, growing locals and implementing newly recommended policies (still subject to full membership vote).

Being the first full conference in years, and mainly composed of new members, a certain procedural groove and other process adjustments need to be found. But this, I believe, simply comes with the newness of all being in the same room and many of us having used different meeting methods in other organizations or moments. We had a full agenda completed in a timely manner and lots of business took care of. A comradely and respectful spirit prevailed. Intelligent discussion occurred. WSA has charted its course for the next year with ambitious internal and external changes and approaches proposed......if the follow through will be as good as the discussions then we can say we have made great strides.

More reporting to follow.
