 Discussion on WBAI This Thursday, June 11, from 9 - 10 p.m. on WBAI 99.5 FM and www.wbai.org on "Haiti: The Struggle Continues," correspondent Yves Pierre-Louis will report on the growing confrontations between Haitian police and students at the State University of Haiti. In several days of demonstrations, students called on President René Préval to sign into law the new $4.90 per day minimum wage recently approved by Parliament. They also asked for better conditions at the State University. Faced with no response from Préval and brutal repression (shootings, tear gas firing into the state hospital, beatings, and arrests) by the Haitian National Police and U.N. occupation troops, the university students are now openly calling for President Préval’s resignation.

Workers are demanding the ratification of a minimum wage adjustment of 200 Gourdes that the Haitian Parliament has passed since May 5th. Workers, for some time now, have been demanding a minimum wage hike. The Préval/Pierre-Louis administration is asking for another round of negotiations. This is just a political maneuver to demobilize workers, accompanied by a high level of repression, such as against the recent May Day marches and the June student rallies.
In the aftermath of the January earthquake that devastated Haiti, greed combined with militarization of the aid effort have worsened the disaster. Traffic controllers at the U.S. military-occupied airport in Port-au-Prince repeatedly re-routed flights for Doctors Without Borders, while allowing planes carrying military equipment to land. White Baptist missionaries, claiming to be operating an adoption service for the earthquake's orphans, were actually stealing children from their parents. Meanwhile, cruise ships continued to visit Haiti, proving that the island nation could still provide a fantastic spot for rich people looking for a holiday in someone else's misery.
