Athens: Statement of Nikos R., a friend of Alexandros Grigoropoulos

category greece / turkey / cyprus | community struggles | interview author Montag Dezember 15, 2008 03:30author by epoliticusauthor email epoliticus at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Translation of the statement of Nikos R., which describes what happened on the night of Saturday (6 December 2008), and how the police shot his friend Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

Nikos:
I am a first year high school student at Psychiko Public High School. I knew Alexandros, or Gregory (the pet name which we used for him, derived from his last name) since the fourth grade in elementary school. We attended the same school. Until the first year of middle school we were not close friends. From the first year of middle school, however, until yesterday when they killed him, we were close friends.

Interviewer:
Yesterday, on 6 December 2008, were you with Alexandros?

Nikos:
Yesterday, around 5:50 p.m., I went with a friend to Larisis Station. Before I arrived, however, I had spoken with Alexandros. He told me that he was going to go to a polo match ... I told him to call me when the match was over so that we could meet at Mesolongi St., in Exarcheia. He was going to go to the match with his friends Nikos F. and P. Ch. We used to meet there regularly. We planned to go to Faros Psychikou, to find our friends from our old schools and go do something together, because yesterday I celebrated my name day.

Interviewer:
In the end, Alexandros called you when the match ended. Where was he going to go?

Nikos:
Yes, he called me and told me to come and he would set out as well from the athletic field ... From what I see on my cell phone, the call from Alexandros happened at 7:10 p.m.

Interviewer:
When did you meet with Alexandros on Mesolongi St. in Exarcheia?

Nikos:
I don't remember exactly. About 45 minutes before the incident. From my friend's house, I walked. I went up Ipeirou St. (if I am not mistaken), then directly to the Museum, left up on Stournari St., up to the square on the right, and 10 meters afterwards is Mesolongi St.
I waited for him for 3 to 4 minutes.

Interviewer:
When he came what did you do?

Nikos:
When he came we went to a convenience store ten meters further up and we bought something to eat and two soft drinks ... We went back again to the sidewalk on Mesologgiou St. to eat and talk.

Interviewer:
Where exactly did you sit?

Nikos:
We sat there by the entrance of an apartment building at the intersection of Mesolongi and Tzavella, on the left side where we could see Zoodochou Pigis St. There they have three railings on the walkway where you can sit. We sat there. (At this point they show the witness a printed map of the area.) We ate the things we had bought and suddenly, as we were talking, we heard a somewhat loud bang. Near enough to us that we could hear it, but far enough away that we couldn't figured out what had happened. We didn't pay any attention ...

Interviewer:
Did you see light accompany the bang that you described to me?

Nikos:
No, because from the direction where we heard the bang, we didn't have visual contact, because there was a wall in front of us ...
In order to see what happens on Navarinou St., you have to leave down the middle of the walkway of Tzavella St.

After a minute and a half we heard about four or five passersby say "the cops are coming, something happened...". So out of curiosity, Alexandros and I went to the middle of Tzavella St. to see what had happened. A distance of two to three meters away ... When we went out into the middle of the walkway, we saw from a distance of 15 to 20 meters two police officers. They were right at the intersection of Zoodochou Pigis and Tzavella. One was taller than the other. Next they stopped at the intersection of the two streets ... In front of us, there was no one else. Alexandros was in front of me and I was behind and to the right of them. When the police stopped at Zoodochou Pigis and Tzavella, they had their hands, left or right I don't remember, on their weapons which were in their holsters, which hang from the belt. Someone from behind me tossed an empty plastic bottle and naturally it did not reach the police. I forgot to tell you that when I saw the police, they started to curse at me and Alexandros, saying "We will f... the Virgin Mary, come here and I'll show you who is the tough guy" and things like that. The guys behind us were yelling "get back" and "go to hell..." at the police ...

When someone threw the plastic bottle, the police, both of them if I am not mistaken, took their weapons out of their holsters, aimed in front of them, that is towards the place where I, Alexandros and the other person were, and three continuous shots were heard. I forgot to tell you that I am sure that one of the two police officers held his weapon with both hands. I saw then - and I am absolutely sure - that the police weren't shooting either towards the sky or towards the ground. They aimed towards our location and fired!

Alexandros fell down, if I am not mistaken on the first or second gunshot, surely anyways before the third ... Afterwards, I didn't know what was going on. People were yelling and some people lifted up Alexandros' shirt. I saw that he had a hole in the middle of the chest and a little towards the heart. There was blood from the wound ...

Let me tell you also that the police who fired, when they saw Alexandros fall, they left. I don't remember in which direction ... Then the ambulance came and took Alexandros, dead. I say this because he didn't have a pulse and there was blood coming from his mouth ...

Interviewer:
What light was there in the place where you described the incident?

Even though night had fallen, there was light from the street lamps on the poles which shines and also from the shops ... Only one lamp wasn't working, to the left of Alexandros ...

Interviewer:
Do you want to tell us something else from everything you know?

The only thing I want to tell you is that they didn't kill Alexandros. They murdered him in cold blood...

I put together the below bi-lingual leaflet of the statement of Nikos R., which describes what happened on the night of December 6 and how the police shot his friend Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

I think that this would be the best thing that Anarchist-Communists could distribute in Greek exile / ex-pat communities abroad as it's a factual, personal, non-partisan, eye-witness statement that will resonate with a lot of people and build sympathy and support for the struggle in Greece.

I've also left a space on the end of the English side for your group name if you wish to distribute it locally.

We, the oppressed ones, are every day living days when the states make our lives poorer through their injustice, when the powers steal our lives through corruption. Today, what the war between the AKP constituents has showed us, is not only the theft of this government but also the reality that all governments would be thieves. Because beyond the governments, the states are stealing our lives.

Last week a group of protesters started guarding action after some trees were taken down illegally in the name of urban gentrification projects. In the second day of the protest, very early in the morning, the police attacked the protesters heavily with gas bombs, presssured water and plastic bullets and wounded many protesteds. A spark began against this event of state terrorism and spread accross the country turning into a massive action and organized the big revolt. The public organized against increasing attacks, state terrorism and police violence and have been turning the streets into the area of resistance. This public revolt has been streaming for four days and is constantly spreading. [Italiano]

In this situation we live we need all to realise that we must take the matters into our hands to move in self-management of the production and society. Who indeed is still confident of all of these who run and govern this country for years? Who gives a legitimacy to their rulers and mechanisms? Why has everything to work for the advance and the power of those few?

On Tuesday, 8 February, by 4pm, the coordinated attack of junta’s henchmen culminated against the people of Keratea (Attica-Greece). During the last two months, since 11 December, residents and people in solidarity resist strongly against the landfill construction project in Lavreotiki area. People oppose by any means to the plan of their lives’ deterioration and the natural wealth’s plunder that are attempted by the construction companies’ hyenas and their political crutches of democratic dictatorship.

imageGreece: Creditors and States are nothing ... Jul 04 by Dmitri 0 comments

Therefore there are not dilemmas. If the broader class, base, social movement in Greece can gradually and through perseverance and faith in the struggle to oppose resolutely and practically the confide of the lives of workers, unemployed, pensioners, immigrants in the hands of State, governments and authority generally wherever it comes from, and put into immediate operation and extend grass-roots structures like those cited above, this will be a great victory, a huge (re)starting forward, especially now, these critical moments for everybody - now that the masks have been fallen.

At the time of the writing of this article the ruling class is continuing to search for the "right" person who as "transitional" prime minister can guarantee implementation of the unpopular measures to be taken against the people of Greece, squeezing them once again and ensuring continuation of the most savage exploitation in recent history. Kostas Avramidis of Irish Anarchist-platform WSM, piece, on current conditions in Greece gives a flavour of what is going on in one of the small number of countries in Europe where there is ongoing mass public action against the austerity agenda. He draws our attention to community campaigns against unwanted capitalist projects, where the traditional political system has been bypassed. Kostas sees this as a symptom of a rising political consciousness among ordinary Greeks, but he poses his own concerns if this will be enough to transform the plight of the Greek working class in a radical way.

It is the people that have already passed the threshold between indignation and resistance that constitute this square which is trying to find other squares in order to provide them with the ground for locality in terms of resistance, claiming and creation, it is this square that brought together tens of thousands of people, it is this square that fought a tenacious battle in the center of Athens on June 28th and 29th. It is this square that by passing the threshold etches a new path and keeps the door of future and hope open for others, it is the social pioneer of the Greek society, it is the rival to the one-way course imposed by capitalism, it is the shadows that will always return through the teargas clouds…

All austerity measures forced on Greek people since 2010 constitute a small hors d'oeuvre in relation to the upcoming tsunami of social poverty and squalor that will be served to them as the main course by the capital and the Greek government, the IMF and EU directorate. The percentage of “official” unemployment has surpassed 16%, while the real one is estimated to be more than 20%. [Ελληνικά] [Castellano]
