Dublin demonstration against violent Czech riot police suppression of festival

A small demonstration took place at the Czech embassy in Dublin yesterday to protest at the violent repression in the Czech republic of a free festival. During the repression one person was killed as the police used tear gas, stun grenades, water cannon, APC's and riot squads on the peaceful crowd.

It is very hard to understand what the possible motivation was behind the police attack. They are only claiming they were protecting neighbooring land but the Czech Prime Minister has suggested that the real reason was that the festival was believed to be organised by anarchists. He stated "These are no dancing children. .......... This core is build from people with dangerous anarchist's thrives and they are internationally connected.......... and hour after hour thousands come and the police forces cannot stop them."

This was a planned affair that involved transporting 1200 riot police, water cannons and APC's to the rural location where the festival was held. It appears that in the Czech republic there is no longer to be any room for any sort of alternative at all!

Around ten people attended the demonstration which had been called by Czechs living in Dublin. Posters explaining what had happened were taped onto the embassy gates and onto surrounding trees and posts. Leaflets were distributed to people passing by. Graffiti reading 'You can't stop the dancing' had been sprayed outside the embassy.

A laptop with a film of the police attack had been brought along. The film clearly shows lines of riot police firing stun grenades into the crowds of festival goers before attacking them with water cannon. As posters on the gate explained a legal agreement had been signed with the owner of the land the festival was on.

there are ongoing massive demonstrations (cca 5, 6 000 people) here in czech and police action became a hot political issue. (while opposition conservative party protests against the police action, clearly just for political benefits, social democrats who are in the goverment defend police.)

unfortunatelly, there is a big danger of cooptation of the protests: it´s a question if the leading organizaters are capable to defend their autonomy from manipulation from the side of political circus. many of them also shares illusion about "developed democracy" of western europe (while they forgot about criminal justice act in britain etc.). and many of them behave as a "police" when they try to pacify the rage of protesters...

by the way, some links:
here you can find the example of police brutality:

here you can find our leaflet which we spread at demonstrations (ok, in czech... :(( ):

David any chance you could write a short article for Anarkismo.net on the police riot and the protests - you could include a translation of the leaflet (actually you could also post the Czech text of the leaflet to the site).

hi andrew,
actually we published the gloss concerning techno and police violence in our web and spread it also in demonstrations but it is more challenging protests and not very informative article (because it was directly for the people who *were* at the festival so everybody known what´s going on). however i will try to combine it with more informations and send it to you, ok?
i´m very busy during weekend but through next week i will do it.
take care,
david
